24 rule explanations across NBA, WNBA and NFL. Each reference identifies its edition or historical example. Current guidance provides context; older calls must be judged under the rules in effect when they occurred.

The standard

Whistle Review evaluates NBA, WNBA and NFL decisions using the rule and replay standard in effect when each play occurred—not today’s rule and not fan consensus.

1

Contemporary rule

Apply the rule and replay standard that existed when the play occurred.
2

Evidence hierarchy

League rules, official explanations and primary evidence outrank commentary and fan consensus.
3

Outcome neutrality

Evaluate the officiating decision—not hypothetical alternate game outcomes.
About Whistle Review

Controversial calls, without the outrage cycle.

Whistle Review is an independent reference project examining disputed NBA, WNBA and NFL officiating decisions using the evidence and rule standard that applied when each play occurred.

What Whistle Review does

Every review is organized around four questions: What happened? What rule applied at the time? What did the officials or league rule? And does the available evidence support that decision?

The goal is not to grade referees, advocate for a team, or retroactively apply today’s rulebook to yesterday’s play. When a league formally acknowledges an error, Whistle Review says so. When the evidence supports the ruling, that is reflected too. When the record remains genuinely ambiguous, the verdict can remain a Judgment Call or Inconclusive.

How the evidence is weighed

Whistle Review favors league rulebooks, historical rule language, replay standards, official statements, pool reports and officiating explanations. High-quality contemporaneous reporting and expert analysis may provide additional context.

Independent project

Whistle Review is an independent reference site. It is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the NBA, WNBA, NFL, their teams, or their officials. League and team names and other third-party marks are used only for identification and reference.

Website operation

The site is hosted using Carrd. Hosting and infrastructure providers may process routine technical information such as IP address, browser or device information, request timestamps and security logs as part of delivering and protecting the site. Those systems are operated under the providers’ own policies.

Supabase

Whistle Review is designed to use Supabase as a structured content backend. During the initial test deployment, the call archive uses local preview data rather than a connected Supabase database. When Supabase is activated, it will be used to deliver published site content and this policy can be updated if the data flow materially changes.

Analytics and advertising

Whistle Review does not intentionally install a separate analytics or advertising tracker in the current V1 test build. If analytics, advertising, or additional measurement tools are added later, this policy should be updated to describe them.
